Apply with your artwork/writing! Extended Deadline: 7th of August

Apply late via email!

Submission Criteria – Written Works

  • Max character count: 7,000 characters

  • Language: Hungarian or English

  • Lead: All texts should start with a short, attention-grabbing lead/introduction.

  • Argumentation: If your writing contains arguments, back up any claims that aren’t self-evident.

  • References: Provide references, sources, images, and illustrations in Chicago Author-Date style.

  • Images: Upload any images in CMYK format. The image must be free to use, meaning:
    a) You have written permission for print use,
    b) The author has been dead for 70+ years,
    c) You created the image yourself, or
    d) It is explicitly marked as free to use.

  • Note: Upload a short note explaining your intention with the piece:
What is your goal? Which genre(s) does it belong to? Does it include argumentation? If so, what is the main claim?
This helps us understand your intent during the editing process.

  • Originality: The writing must be your intellectual property. Acknowledge others' ideas and cite them in Chicago Author-Date style.
In cases of plagiarism, we will not accept further submissions from that person. We want to read your thoughts and your voice—not AI-generated content.

  • Artificial Intelligence:
We do not support using AI as a tool in the writing process. However, because AI is relevant to the topic “The Day After Tomorrow,” we understand if you want to reflect on it.
If you do so, use AI only to illustrate a phenomenon—not to assist with the actual writing. Make it explicit what you did yourself and why you had the AI do certain things (if any).

  • Foreign terminology: Not everyone is familiar with all professional jargon. Please write in accessible language, or explain technical terms in footnotes.
One of our magazine’s goals is to democratise public discourse and make it accessible to all.

  • First publication: Only submit pieces that have not been published elsewhere.
If you’re submitting something originally created for university or a similar assignment, update it to fit the theme.

The Day After Tomorrow

The Day After Tomorrow

The next theme of Kereszthuzat is: “The Day After Tomorrow.” For the second issue of our magazine, we’re looking for all kinds of writing and artistic work that reflect on or connect to this theme.

The Day After Tomorrow

In a rapidly changing world, staying informed feels crucial—but the constant flood of information can leave us adrift, focused only on immediate concerns. To move forward, we must pause, reflect, and actively shape a shared vision for the future.

How do we imagine the more distant future? What do we want to happen, and what does reality suggest might happen instead? What will the day after tomorrow look like… or the day after that?

Your work can explore utopias, dystopias, both, or neither—anything goes, as long as it reflects on the theme. The theme is open to interpretation, and your piece can approach it directly or indirectly.

Let some fresh air in!

Who Can Submit?

In short: anyone. We want to bring fresh air into Hungarian cultural life. We have two goals:

  1. To give a platform to young creators to showcase their work.

  2. To build a creative, active, and inspiring community.

What Can You Submit and How?

We accept submissions in two main categories:

  1. Written works

  2. Artistic creations

Your writing can be in any existing, coherent style (except hate speech). Your art can be in any medium.

Please submit your work via the Google form on our website [link].

Before submitting, read the submission guidelines carefully and make sure your work meets all the listed criteria.

You may submit as many works as you'd like, but remember: quality over quantity.

If you're submitting multiple distinct pieces, please fill out the form separately for each one.

Deadline

The deadline has passed; however, you can still apply late with works in English via kereszthuzat.kollektiva@gmail.com.

After Submission (criteria later)

Editorial Process

The editors of Kereszthuzat are responsible for selecting quality and relevant work for publication.

  • For artworks, the editorial board will jointly decide what gets printed.

  • For written submissions, each text is reviewed by at least two editors.
You will receive detailed initial feedback with potential edits or suggestions.

To help us interpret your work with your intentions in mind, please include the short explanatory note mentioned in the written criteria.

We strive to request only objectively necessary edits.

By September 1, all texts must be finalized to be included in the issue.

What Happens After You Submit

From August 1, our editors will begin reviewing the submissions.
Submitting your work does not guarantee publication.
We respect every creator’s work and make no decisions over anyone’s head. If necessary, we may request certain changes—please approach the editorial process with flexibility.
The final published version is usually the result of multiple collaborative rounds.

We will let you know by mid/late September whether your work will be included in the issue.

Capacity and Limitations

Submitting a piece does not guarantee publication.

  • Our budget is small and we can’t print unlimited pages.

  • We work entirely unpaid and our time is limited.
This is also why deadlines are strict.

  • We must make selections not every work is ready for print.

We do our best to assess everything as objectively as possible.
Please approach these constraints with understanding.
We want to give as many of you a platform as possible but our resources are limited.

Kérjük kezeljétek megértéssel ezeket a dolgokat. Igyekszünk minél többeteknek platformot adni, de a mi lehetőségeink is végesek.

Questions?

We’re curious to see what “The Day After Tomorrow” means to you.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out: kereszthuzat.kollektiva@gmail.com

Submission Criteria – Artistic Works

  • Technical specs: Submit images of your artwork in CMYK, 300ppi resolution

  • Video: For video content, send the full video in good quality via WeTransfer

  • Other formats: If your work doesn’t fit conventional formats and you’re unsure how to submit, feel free to contact us by email.

  • Title: Give your artwork an identifiable title so we can include it in the table of contents.

  • Quantity: There is no maximum number of artworks you can submit, but again: quality over quantity. Please don’t send your entire portfolio.

  • Artificial Intelligence:
We do not support the use of AI in the creative process. However, AI-related topics are relevant to our theme.
If you want to reflect on AI, use it to depict a phenomenon, not as a tool in the creation itself.
Be clear about what you did and what (if anything) the AI did and why.

Agreement

AGREEMENT NOT READY YET. FEEL FREE TO SUBMIT WITHOUT IT, WE WILL HANDLE IT LATER.

In order for your work to be published in our magazine, we need to sign a short contract - yes, it's frustrating for us to have to deal with legal texts. The contract essentially states two things: 1) we can use the work you submit; 2) the copyright of your work remains yours, it is considered your intellectual property.

You will find the contract on this page as soon as it is ready. If you are ready with your application materials before we finish writing the contract, please submit your work without the contract and we will send you the contract.

Let the fresh air in – with us! The field is open, be a reader and a creator at the same time, submit your creations and writings!

Take part!
